Our History

1950's poster for Sylglas products

1958

Sylglas was established in 1958 when Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd supplied Denso Tape to British Rail, to seal and protect cable work on the glass roofs of the old Victorian stations. Staff at British Rail soon found that the product had another use – it was incredibly effective at sealing the glazing bars on their wooden greenhouses.

Another great benefit was that it was simple to apply with no specific skills required, meaning its application was well within the ability of most people. As the main use of the tape was sealing glass, the name Sylglas was born.

1958 - 1970

The Company saw the potential for a DIY range of products to help homeowners maintain their properties, and reduce the need to call out a tradesperson for sealing and waterproofing jobs around the home and garden.

In the mid-1960s a few rolls of Sylglas Tape were sent to the BBC’s gardening expert of the day, who was so impressed with the product that he featured it in an episode of one of his popular weekly gardening shows. This caused an overnight increase in demand for the product and clearly illustrated some of the potential that was waiting to be developed.

Sylglas Exhibition 1985

1970 - 1990

In the 1970s, aluminium greenhouses became increasingly popular and the original Sylglas Tape application for wooden glazing bars shifted focus to sealing aluminium conservatories, leaking gutters and downpipes. Other useful applications were discovered such as frost and corrosion prevention on exposed metal garden water taps and pipework. The product’s versatility meant that a roll of tape was very handy to keep in your toolkit both for annual maintenance and emergencies.

The Company attended many exhibitions to promote their products including the Ideal Home Show, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and various DIY consumer and trade shows around the country.

Pottery kit

1970 - 1990 Continued

The Sylglas range of products grew during these years as did the uses. A large range of products were available from Flashing Tape to ‘The Make-or-Break Kit’. This unique kit was based around a high-quality white epoxy putty (sold then as Sylmasta) and included all of the items needed, to mend and restore broken china and pottery, including a set of glazing paints and brushes. Although this kit was a complete change in use from the normal Sylglas product range, it became a very good seller on sight at exhibitions, as well as being popular with professional antique pottery restorers.

1990 - 2010

Over the next 20 years, the Company fine-tuned its range of products focusing on three core areas; sealing, waterproofing and safety.

The addition of a range of anti-slip tapes brought a new relevance to the brand, particularly with the growing popularity of wooden decking which had introduced many new slip hazards, for the young and old alike.

Customer demand remained high due to the cost-effectiveness of the products, and the longevity when properly applied. In 2008 the brand celebrated its 50th anniversary and marked the occasion with a special celebratory logo.

The Company modernised the Sylglas branding with a new logo and packaging. With changes in customers’ purchasing habits, products were made available to buy online via the website and today can be purchased through our sole distributor, Rustins.

With over 65 years of expertise, our range of products has proven to provide effective, long-lasting repair solutions around the home and garden – all achieved without any specific skills required and at a minimum cost. When faced with the increased regularity of severe weather, we are confident that our product range is even more relevant today than it used to be.
